Meaningful rights of passage

Meaningful rites of passage are essential, vital markers of where we are in life.  If done well, they give us a handhold for stepping across a threshold from one phase of life to another.  Rites canbe performed privately but I think they are more powerful when experienced in a group and as part of joining a group.  Our culture is full of rites of passage done poorly: street gang initiation, fraternity hazing gone bad.  Also, the medicalization of childbirth has sterilized the rite of passage for women going from maidenhood to motherhood.  Read this example of the need of a rite and how a people responded.  Then check out this book with the same ideas……
